Need and Importance of Accreditation and Assessment of schools

Introduction :
The state government of Maharashtra has formed a core group who will supervise and decide the accreditation of primary and secondary schools of the state. The core group appointed by the state will go to three states namely Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. They will be involved in studying the accreditation process prevalent in these states. They will also focus on assessment of schools under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan scheme. Based on their survey the core team will submit a report.
Suman Karandikar, an eminent educationist will head the team as the President whereas Shakuntala Kale, deputy director of MSCERT (Maharashtra state council of education research and Training),and Suvarna Kharat has been appointed as member secretary. The committee will soon lay down its future mode of action.
Accreditation is a major issue in maintaining a high standard of education in secondary schools.  State Education Minister, has already appointed QCI (Quality Council India) and Educare, an NGO to complete the task. The committee that has been formed, apart from ensuring quality, will see to the fact that there has been proper utilization of grants given by the state government to the respective schools.
Why Accreditation and Assessment of schools
Education plays a vital role in the development of any nation. Therefore, there is a premium on both quantity and quality  of academic Programmes of primary and secondary schools Like in any other domain, the method to improve quality remains the same. Finding and recognizing new needs and satisfying them with products and services of international standards.


Objective of Accreditation and Assessment of schools
  • To helps the institution to know its strengths, weaknesses and opportunities through an informed review process.
  • To identify internal areas of planning and resource allocation.
  • Outcome provides funding agencies objective data for performance funding.
  • Gives institutions a new direction and identity.
  • Provides society with reliable information on quality of education offered.
  • Employers have access to information on the quality of education offered to potential recruiters.
  • Promotes intra and inter-institutional interactions.

The Importance of Assessment in School Education

1.     An assessment test can measure a student's strengths in areas such as   language ability or math skills.
2.     An assessment test may also help students find out about their weaknesses. A student may believe she understands material only to find out she is not up to grading standards. Such testing can be particularly useful in elementary school,
3.     A standardized test can help identify pedagogical methods that really work. School officials may discover that previously thought-out theories pertaining to specific educational practices do not work in actual practice.
4.     Standardized assessment testing can help school district officials decide where best to allocate educational resources.
Conclusion :
  • Accreditation and Assessment of schools helps the institution to find its strengths, weaknesses and opportunities through an informed review process. Also identify internal areas of planning and resource allocation. Furthermore Accreditation and Assessments Outcome provides funding agencies objective data for performance funding.
